H I S T O R Y :
Ana-Lucia Cortez was born in Los Angeles, California to Teresa Cortez. Though her father's whereabouts are unknown, Ana still has that tomboyish edge in her life. Her mother is the Captain of the Los Angeles Police Department in which the young woman is a police officer in the LAPD. Expecting a child with her boyfriend Danny, Ana was shot during her pregnancy in a robbery when she allowed a man to reach for his I.D. thinking he was underage and in the wrong place at the wrong time. He instead pulled out a gun and shot her in the stomach killing the baby inside of her. It took several months of psychological and physical therapy to realize that she wasn't getting Danny back and it didn't look like she'd get her child back so it was better to be on the force again.

Convincing her therapist to put her back on, the office had given her a cake for a surprise welcome back party. When asked to identify the man known as Jason McCormick, Ana-Lucia denies that it's him after showing erratic and unstable behavior. She then goes to a bar he is visiting and tells him she was pregnant before shooting him several times in cold blood and disposed of the weapon in a trash bin. Teresa knows it's her daughter's fault and asks to help Cortez but Ana-Lucia denies the help and quits the force.

During her time at the airport as a airline security personnel she is approached at the bar on her break by a man named Christian Shephard. He from there had asked her to come to Sydney with him to be his bodyguard. Reluctant to go, Cortez accepts and heads to Sydney only to stay in a hotel room while he drank alcohol in bars and visited his wife late at night in the pouring rain asking to see his daughter. Enough was enough as she headed back to the Sydney airport, leaving Christian on his own and booked a flight with Oceanic 815 airlines for a ride back to Los Angeles, California.

From there she met a man by the name of Jack Shephard at the bar when ordering her tequila and tonic. The two conversed until Ana got a phone call on her cell phone, telling him she had to take it and that they'd have the next drink on the plane. Answering it her mother tells her to come home after she tells her that she wants to come home. "So come home." her mother states. The last call she'd make and the last time she'd speak to her mother again.

The ocean was rougher than the airplane had been despite the tail end landing in the water. Ana-Lucia emerged from the waves to find literally a whole beach full of the worried, the wounded and the dead. She manages to appoint herself the leader of the 'Tailies' and saves a young girl and her brother. When they move up to the beach there are several people taken. Ana-Lucia kills one of them with a rock and spots a list. A list of all of them. She moves them further into the jungle after suspecting that a man by the name of Nathan was not on the plane.

Ana digs a pit and puts him in it only to find him dead the next time she sees him. It's revealed that Goodwin has taken the kids and the stronger of the survivors during a 'break' with Ana-Lucia up on a hill. She kills him and tells the Tailies they're safe.

It's now that Sawyer, Jin and Michael wash up on the Tail end's side and Ana must find out who they are by asking Eko to knock her out and put her in the pit. He does so and she finds out that they're from Oceanic 815. Ana steals Sawyer's gun after punching him and gets back up to the surface. Slowly one by one the survivors get out of the pit (even with some rude conversing with her and Sawyer.) finally they travel through the jungle even as Sawyer is wounded and hurt from the raft incident and being shot.

Ana doesn't make this any easier for him however and as it pours rain in the jungle she fires her weapon... killing Shannon Rutherford by accident. Sayid Jarrah (Shannon's boyfriend) is then outraged and put down by Eko as Ana-Lucia contemplates what to do. She has Sayid tied up and eventually Eko takes Sawyer back to the Fuselage where Jack and company are. Ana cuts the tie on Sayid and tells him to kill her, that she deserves it. He doesn't and they make their way back to the Fuselage through the jungle.

Next thing she sees is Jack Shephard and Sayid carrying Shannon's dead body out of the jungle and towards the beach to have a proper burial. However later sometime Ana is called upon by Locke to talk to a prisoner by the name of Henry Gale. He tells her that he has a balloon. Charlie, Sayid and her go to find the balloon but it's not what it seems.

After they chain Henry up there isn't much left to do then try to get it out of him. Ana-Lucia is nearly killed by him if Locke hadn't been there to save her. Libby sees her trying to sew up her cut on her forehead and tells her not to do anything stupid. Fed up with what 'Henry' was doing and that he was not telling the truth and did try to kill her; Ana sets out and steals Sawyer's gun by seducing him.

When she goes back to the Hatch where Henry is, she's all set to shoot him but instead Michael asks to shoot him. Ana hands him the gun.
